Turn a screen recording into a transcript, summary, and action items
A normal screen recorder gives you a video file. A useful archive starts when you can search what people said, see what was on screen, and jump to the second where a decision was made. On Windows, the first stage — capture, storage, and transcription — can stay local.
Two ways to begin
In ScreenBrief, start a new screen recording with system audio and microphone input, or add a file you already have. Importing is useful for webinars, product demos, and meetings recorded in another app.
- Choose Record screen and select the screen and audio sources, or use Add recording.
- When capture ends, the item enters the processing queue; large jobs run outside the application interface.
- Local Whisper creates a timestamped transcript with speaker labels.
- Optional screen analysis records meaningful visual changes and connects them to the conversation on a timeline.
What you can find later
Full-text search covers utterances, decisions, and screen events across the library. A result points to the exact second, so you do not have to scrub through an hour-long video to find a price, a customer objection, or the screen that was being demonstrated.
Transcript, brief, and reusable outputs
- An editable transcript with speakers and timestamps.
- Short and detailed summaries of the meeting or presentation.
- Separate action items, decisions, and commitments extracted from the conversation.
- Chat grounded in the recording, with links to source passages.
- Markdown, PDF, SRT, and VTT transcript exports plus ICS calendar actions.
Privacy depends on the mode you select
The recording and ScreenBrief database stay on disk. With local Whisper, audio is not sent to a transcription service. Summaries and chat can run through local Ollama. If you choose an external provider, the required data reaches that provider under your own key, so that mode should not be described as fully offline.
When a transcript is not enough
If the recording shows software configuration, a Figma project, a report, or a presentation, the spoken transcript loses part of the context. Enable screen analysis and use the timeline for those recordings. For audio-only material, switch it off to shorten processing and avoid using a vision model.
